The Wedding Singers

The Wedding Singers 1

Two teachers, a library manager and the manager of a boatyard would not seem the most likely line-up for a barbershop quartet, but cousins Stephen, Paul, Bim and Richard are just that.

Hailing from Lowestoft and all still living in Suffolk and Norfolk, the two sets of brothers, who are also cousins, are The TestostaTones; a sharp-suited, close-harmony acapella group who specialise in bringing 1950s Doo-Wop to the 21st Century and say they can “do it anytime and anywhere.”

Travelling the UK to deliver bespoke acapella performances, the foursome are now specialising in weddings, giving old favourites and personal songs a Doo-Wop twist.

“Weddings are increasingly becoming more personalised, with the theme, entertainment and even the cakes reflecting couples’ interests and personalities. The TestostaTones can offer couples getting married with a personalised set of songs, a surprise performance, or even a special themed performance”, explains Paul, the youngest member of the foursome.

The group, who are all trained singers and had been pursuing separate musical and performing interests and careers, started performing together in 2007 when Stephen heard a song that was recorded by vocal group, The Ink Spots, and thought ,“we should give that a go”. Making their debut at a fundraising benefit and singing their own version of a classic acapella song, their performance was so popular they left with further bookings and opportunities to perform whole sets of a Doo-Wop styled performance.

Having gained momentum across the eastern region, it was after a performance on the Drivetime Radio 2 show that the group gained national success. “We got the chance to perform a bespoke version of the Harry Belafonte Banana Boat song live and realised what a great opportunity it could be for us to really push our sound and what we do to the rest of the UK,” explains Richard. “The performance was really successful and we haven’t looked back since”.

The foursome are now signed up to national agencies in London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Norwich and have performed for international companies such as Reuters, Harley Davidson and Ernst & Young LLP. They have also appeared at prestigious venues including The Royal Festival Hall and Hampton Court Palace have been featured in The Sun and The Times newspapers and on Look East and GMTV.

“It has really taken off for us since we performed on Radio 2, we have bookings every week for parties and events but the weddings are our favourites”, says Bim.

The TestostaTones now offer a range of wedding performances including Doo-Wop performances for first dances, drinks reception performances to entertain guests and most popularly The Wedding Crashers; a service booked by a bride or groom as a surprise for their partner, or by the couple as a surprise for their guests. “We turn up at the venue dressed as waiters, wedding guests, tradesmen – whatever the customer wants, and then burst into song” explains Bim.

The element of surprise and the unknown is something that the group all enjoy, despite a few near scrapes, “Recently we nearly got thrown out because people didn’t realise we were actually booked to be there! We were booked by the bride as a surprise for her husband and pretended that three of us were old friends and one of us was a pianist, there to serenade them for their first dance. We had to pretend that the three of us had taken advantage of the free bar and accidently slammed the piano lid on the ‘pianists’ fingers, at which point the groom and the father of the bride looked like they were going to thump us!”

“After we sang a song for their first dance, both the bride and groom thanked us all for such a memorable performance!” says Stephen.

“It is touches like these that make a wedding truly personal, unique and one that people won’t forget”.
