Jarrold – April 23

Food & Drink

A good egg…

This month is one which brings with it promises of fresh fabulous feasts and everything downright delicious. From the warm, cinnamon scent of hot cross buns to the fragrant bouquet of herbs on your roast of choice, April is an exciting time for everything edible and nothing brings as much childlike joy as the gift of the chocolate egg.

Previously seen as a symbol of fertility and new beginnings across Europe, the first chocolate egg was introduced to Britain in 1873 by Fry’s of Turkish Delight fame. Since then, the egg has risen in popularity with a variety of interpretations and flavours. From the child-friendly brightly coloured treats (Tony’s Chocolonely Egg-stra Special Milk Chocolate Assorted Eggs Box 150g, £5) to the downright decadent for the chocoholics (Butlers Milk Chocolate Large Wrapped Egg 395g, £18), there is an egg for everyone this Easter.

And for those who may have previously been overlooked, there are some speciality surprises such as Booja Booja Hazelnut Crunch Chocolate Truffles Egg, 138g £25, which is a dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free luxury or Happi Oat Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel Chocolate Egg, 170g £12, which is made with rich, creamy oat milk chocolate and has no single-use plastic in the packaging.

The saying goes “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”, but with so much choice at the Jarrold Food Hall, it would be silly not to.

Wine & Dine

As we move away from the whole-body-hug that is a glass of oaky red and the sparkling bubbles of Christmas, the question is what do we need from our Springtime white wines?

Firstly, it should pair beautifully with the glorious fresh bounty that comes with the season. Spring greens including broad beans, asparagus and broccoli, roast lamb with rosemary and seasonal local shellfish, are begging to be paired with juicy, citrus flavours. Our wine of choice is Winbirri Vineyards Solaris which is a celebration of lemon and apple but with a crisp balance and smoothness.

Seeking a balance of art, nature and science in every bottle of wine, Winbirri Vineyards is a proud Norfolk wine that has won multiple awards and global recognition. The exceptional taste of their Solaris wine is the perfect accompaniment for your Easter feast or even to enjoy on its own when the weather gets warmer and your garden springs to life. Cheers!
