Find your Winter Workout Mojo
It’s time to accept that winter is definitely here. It’s cold, dark, damp, and if you’re anything like me you’d probably rather be somewhere warm and snuggly. But, with the various winter viruses floating around, now more than ever it is essential to keep your immune system strong and healthy, and regular exercise is a vital part of that. So, if you’re struggling to find your Winter Workout Mojo, here are my top tips…
Musical motivation
It’s amazing the effect music can have! Studies have shown that listening to high tempo music not only makes the exercise seem easier, but also actually raises your heart rate and increases the overall benefits of physical training. So put together a playlist of all your dancefloor favourites and get moving!
Treat yourself!
Never underestimate the power of some new kit. Come on, admit it, if you had some exquisite new workout gear or gadgets, you’d be itching to use them!
Layers and layers… and layers
While you’re treating yourself to your new workout wear, make sure you buy some warm but lightweight layers. Trying to work out when you’re freezing is miserable, and also more likely to result in injury, so wrap up warm and gradually lose the layers once you’re up to temperature.
Make an appointment with yourself
If you’re serious about making exercise a part of your routine, then make time for
it like you would for anything else. Put it in your diary and make it non-negotiable. If you just try and fit it in somewhere during the week, the chances are that will never happen. Life will get in the way, so block some time out to dedicate to yourself.
Buddy up!
Find a friend with the same goals as yourself and workout together. Working out with a friend is great for motivation, not only during the workout, but also just to get you out of the house in the first place. Thinking of skipping your session today? You don’t want to let your workout buddy down do you?!
Work(out) from home
Still not keen on venturing out in the cold? One thing we can thank lockdown for is the booming online fitness business. Whether you’re into Pilates, HIIT, strength training, aerobics, indoor cycling, Zumba (or any of the 100s of other class formats), there are literally hundreds of online classes available. You can attend classes live online, or access replays whenever suits you. Many places will also offer you a trial class, or even a trial week for free!
Look forward to coming home!
There’s no doubt that once you’ve coaxed yourself out of the house and have done your workout, you will feel awesome. But what’s even better is having something to look forward to when you come back. Whether that is a delicious meal, a nice warm bath, the next episode of your favourite show, or snuggling down with a good book. So, pamper yourself when you’re finished as a reward for all your hard work!
Get the kit…
Lightweight jacket
I’m a big fan of these jackets from Mountain Warehouse, super lightweight while still being warm, they are great whether you are just popping to the gym, or heading out on a run.
Free Train – chest pack
Much easier than lugging a bag around with you, or constantly having to check if you’ve picked up your phone or wallet. This vest is small, lightweight and will hold all your essentials such as keys, phone, inhalers and snacks!
Active Wear
I’m all about a jazzy legging. These two local companies are great. Novara’s leggings have a super luxurious snuggly feel. Perfect for chilly winter runs or a chilled yoga class, and FunkyFit has a range of active wear to suit whether you are into the gym, equestrian pursuits, or just fancy some cosy sweats to chill in at home.
